Roger Federer and Dinara Safina top seeds at the 2009 US OpenAugust 28, 2009 by Marc Jerbs

Defending US Open champion Roger Federer and World No.1 Dinara Safina are perched on the top of their respective bracket in the 2009 US Open which begins Monday, Aug. 31.

Federer sits alone on top with 15 Grand Slam titles after eclipsing Pete Sampras' record with a superb win against Andy Roddick in Wimbledon. And he could add another on his major collection since favored to win his sixth US Open in a row. He would be a mark man beginning Monday, but when his game is cranking on all cylinders he's tough to beat on the tennis court.

Although, Federer must not easily rest on his laurels since there are other players that could score an upset win against him. There's 2008 US Open runner-up Andy Murray, crowd favorite Andy Roddick and nemesis Rafael Nadal. Federer must expect a very tough battle if he wants to get another US Open title.

World No. 1 Dinara Safina is vying for her first Grand Slam title. She's 0-3 in major finals including a loss to defending US Open champion Serena Williams at the Australian Open. Tennis fans thought that it would be Serena who will be the top seed but she fell to second after the USTA decided to follow the seeding with each player's world ranking.

Serena is a tough customer in a major tournament. She has won three of the past four Grand Slam tournaments and has 11 major titles. She will be seeking her fourth US Open title. Safina may possibly crack under pressure as she will contend with the William sisters as well as Elena Dementiava and Jelena Jankovic.

The handicappers chose Roger Federer and Serena Williams as favorites and will repeat as champions in the 2009 US Open. Now that is an easy betting choice.
